There are numerous candidates for the designation as “planet’s greatest innovation.” The circular axle. The movable type. The combustion motor.
As per a recent publication, however, that honor belongs to the mechanised timber mill conceived through Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.
“Prior to automated sawing, building a simple trading ship necessitated around 10 sawyers laboring for three months,” notes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-powered lumber mills, the same quantity of cut lumber might be manufactured within seven days.”
Thanks to their speedy mechanical saw, which turned timber into boards with almost no human effort, the Dutch could construct ships faster than anyone else, which sparked a century of Netherlands naval, economic as well as artistic dominance across Europe and the world.
The Original Genuine Manufacturing Machine
Corneliszoon’s lumber mill, argues the writer, represented “mankind’s initial authentic factory apparatus.” A wind turbine turned a gear. A single part converted the rotary motion into up-and-down motion to power the saw. A separate mechanism changed that same spinning motion into a lateral movement feeding the log to the cutter. A geared mechanism moved the log forward one precise increment each stroke.
“Every component seemed simple by itself. Corneliszoon’s brilliance was to combine them so they operated in a precisely synchronized sequence, sawing on every descending motion and moving on every return stroke. It was a remarkably intelligent use of basic components.”
