The January transfer window is typically a period of feverish speculation and possible major deals. Several high-profile footballers find themselves connected to moves out of their present teams. We examine some of the key names who might be on the move in January.

The English centre-back has impress for Palace despite a summer transfer to Liverpool falling through. As his contract due to expire in the summer, January is the London club's last opportunity to obtain a transfer fee for their skipper. A host of elite clubs, such as Manchester City and several European giants like Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich, reportedly hold an interest. Yet, a January departure remains unlikely, particularly given the coach's dependence on the defender.

Brennan Johnson

The Wales winger has had starting opportunities hard to come by at Spurs this campaign. Although finishing as the club's leading goalscorer the previous campaign, Johnson has started only a handful of Premier League games. Reports suggest the North London outfit is open to a sale for the correct price, believed to be in the around £40 million. Bournemouth are currently leading the chase, with Crystal Palace, Aston Villa, and Brentford also credited with an interest.

Rúben Neves

This Portuguese midfielder could be set for a return to the Premier League following a period in Saudi Arabia. Now only 28, and with his agreement ending in the summer, he is a potential opportunity. Teams like Liverpool and Manchester United are connected to the former Wolves man. Additionally, there have been rumours from Spanish media that he would be prepared to take a pay cut for a move to the Spanish giants.

M. ter Stegen

The experienced German goalkeeper is now as third-choice at Barça under new coach Hansi Flick. After lost his place and had surgery, a winter exit looks increasingly likely. Villa were once mentioned as a possible destination, but that option currently seems off. Instead, interest from Saudi Arabia and Turkey are reportedly expressing interest in the keeper.

I. Toney

The proven English striker has continued finding the net frequently in the Middle East. Coming back to the Premier League could enhance his fading chances of making the national World Cup. The Turin club are eager to tie down the 20-year-old to a new long-term agreement but are in a race to retain one of Europe's most promising young talents.

Kees Smit

This highly-touted Netherlands teenage midfielder has drawn parallels to Kevin De Bruyne for his playing style. After impressing at the Under-19 European Championship, he has broken into the AZ Alkmaar side. The 19-year-old is heavily expected to complete a big-money transfer this month. Newcastle United reportedly are frontrunners, but are facing stiff competition from Real Madrid for a signing valued at approximately £22 million.
