Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was found guilty of plotting a government overthrow in September and given more than 27 years in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.

This involved attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a possible escape.

In a document approving the custody, the magistrate said information from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.
