The Fifth Toy Story Film Trailer Pits Woody and Buzz Versus a Tablet Computer

It has been 30 years since the first Toy Story film was released, establishing Pixar as a major film company and introducing viewers to beloved figures like the cowboy doll (the actor) and Buzz Lightyear (the voice talent), who are now household names.

Coming in 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, offering a glimpse into the plot but keeping fans wondering how it will resolve the conclusion of Toy Story 4.

The Latest Addition: A Digital Device Spooks the Gang

In the teaser shows Bonnie — who inherited Andy's toys when he left for college — getting a brand new plaything, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She gets her initial digital gadget, and she is excited about it.

Theoretically, the amphibian-inspired device will come to life just like Bonnie's other toys. However, the toys seem to view it as a danger intending to supplant them, which it probably is.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Mysteries from Toy Story 4

One thing the trailer avoids is why the sheriff is returned with his companions in the child's bedroom. The finale of Toy Story 4 saw him set off on a fresh journey with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), journeying with a carnival and helping prize toys locate loving owners.

Certainly, the filmmakers will explain the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the movie. Seeing him show up in the familiar setting without warning is somewhat puzzling, however. It also makes us wonder whether Bo Peep will have returned with Woody. And where is the stuntman toy (the star)?

Continuity from the Last Installment

At the very least, some elements are carrying over from the earlier movie. The last thing Woody did before departing for his new life was hand over his symbol of authority to Jessie (the voice actor), leaving her in charge of Bonnie's bedroom. The clip shows the insignia attached to her shirt.

Hopefully she is remains the key figure among the toys.

Toy Story 5 debuts on the scheduled date.
