A recent study reveals that people who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing such medications must be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a return to original mass within about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team point out that people who lose weight through dieting usually have a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.
The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
People who have stopped the medication explain a powerful return of hunger.
"I experienced something activating and I was suddenly starving," said an individual.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle management.
